5 Things I Wish “They” Would’ve Told Me About CrossFit

CrossFit. It sounds simple enough. But I may have needed to know a little more about it before I stepped into my first CrossFit class. In fact here are 5 things I now desperately wish “they” would’ve told me about CrossFit. You be the judge.

1. THAT I WOULD BECOME A CROSSFIT GADGET ADDICT-

I know every sport has its own gear, but CrossFit gear is so fun! From shoes to run in, rope climbing, and lift weights in to a jump rope, wrist wraps, weight belt, and various types of clothing, I am slowly collecting a gym bag of tools.  I also find myself thinking about which tops work best in certain WOD’s…doing handstand pushups? Can’t wear a top that rises up every time I’m upside down. Jumping rope? Better have a great bra on that keeps the girls in place! And the list goes on. I find myself always looking online at WOD gear and the latest shoes and who can ever have enough Bolder Bands?

2. THAT NUMBERS WOULD START TO RULE MY LIFE-

If you CrossFit, you know what I mean. I’ve never been much of a numbers girl until now. Between Tabata timers and rep counts, I am keeping track of so much. And then I’m comparing…not just me with how I fall amongst the other girls, but how I did compared to the last time I deadlifted or push-pressed. Keeping track of numbers is really good in all sorts of areas of life like banking and cooking but I never thought I would become so obsessed  with my progress or lack thereof. Thank goodness for apps like My Wod  to help me keep track of it all!

3. THAT MY OLD WORKOUTS WOULD BECOME MY REST DAYS-

girls doing crossfit.jpgI think this is one of the hardest things to wrap my head around with CrossFit. Because we are so used pushing hard in CrossFit and leaving it all on the floor, when we don’t do that, we start to feel like we “took it easy”. Before CrossFit I weight lifted 3 days a week and ran 3 days a week. Now, if I just do cardio or 3 sets of 12 of anything, I feel like I cheated. Days when I am on the water doing Stand Up Paddleboard or yoga or spin class, I have to remind myself that these activities count and are good for me!

4. THAT SOME OF MY CLOTHES WOULD STOP FITTING-

Ever heard of squat butt? Yeah, that happens. The joke is that you can tell if a girl does CrossFit (or squats) by looking at her butt because it starts to get round and perky. That’s awesome except in skinny jeans because neither your squat butt or you squat thighs will fit in them! But let me tell you that you will look awesome in shorts!

5. THAT I WOULD FIND MY INNER ATHLETE-

Something that I never, ever would have said about myself is that I’m an athlete. I was a cheerleader and then in college I did step-aerobics and then did the Firm video workouts FOREVER! I worked out but never considered it athletic. CrossFit introduced me to handstand pushups, pull ups, muscle-ups, all kinds of ring work, and rope climbs, all of which are gymnastic moves. Just trying them makes me feel strong and taps into this part of me that athletes must feel-a determination to conquer! I never knew that my body could do so much more than I thought possible and CrossFit pushes me to find out, every WOD, every day, every week.

It they would have told me these things before starting CrossFit I probably wouldn’t have believed them AND also wouldn’t have understood. Some things are just learned by doing. Entering the world of CrossFit is a do and learnenvironment and what transpires during and after every WOD is not just a transformation of my body, but a transformation of my person-my thoughts, my beliefs, and my confidence. How has CrossFit changed you?
